Review: The Address by Fiona Davis

Title: The Address
Author: Fiona Davis
Publisher: Dutton
Publication: July 10, 2018
Pages: 384 pages
Stars: 5 Stars
Where to buy: Amazon, Barnes & Noble

Summary: After a failed apprenticeship, working her way up to head housekeeper of a posh London hotel is more than Sara Smythe ever thought she’d make of herself. But when a chance encounter with Theodore Camden, one of the architects of the grand New York apartment house The Dakota, leads to a job offer, her world is suddenly awash in possibility—no mean feat for a servant in 1884. The opportunity to move to America, where a person can rise above one’s station. The opportunity to be the female manager of The Dakota, which promises to be the greatest apartment house in the world. And the opportunity to see more of Theo, who understands Sara like no one else...and is living in The Dakota with his wife and three young children.

In 1985, Bailey Camden is desperate for new opportunities. Fresh out of rehab, the former party girl and interior designer is homeless, jobless, and penniless. Two generations ago, Bailey’s grandfather was the ward of famed architect Theodore Camden. But the absence of a genetic connection means Bailey won’t see a dime of the Camden family’s substantial estate. Instead, her “cousin” Melinda—Camden’s biological great-granddaughter—will inherit almost everything. So when Melinda offers to let Bailey oversee the renovation of her lavish Dakota apartment, Bailey jumps at the chance, despite her dislike of Melinda’s vision. The renovation will take away all the character and history of the apartment Theodore Camden himself lived in...and died in, after suffering multiple stab wounds by a madwoman named Sara Smythe, a former Dakota employee who had previously spent seven months in an insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island.
One hundred years apart, Sara and Bailey are both tempted by and struggle against the golden excess of their respective ages—for Sara, the opulence of a world ruled by the Astors and Vanderbilts; for Bailey, the free-flowing drinks and cocaine in the nightclubs of New York City—and take refuge and solace in the Upper West Side’s gilded fortress. But a building with a history as rich—and often tragic—as The Dakota’s can’t hold its secrets forever, and what Bailey discovers in its basement could turn everything she thought she knew about Theodore Camden—and the woman who killed him—on its head.

The Address was one of the best books I have read in a while. I really enjoyed the flipping back and forth from present day to the past. The way the author wrote the two stories so in line with each other keeps your attention. I particularly enjoyed the chapters in the past more. But not only did she keep your attention, she added an air of mystery that kept you reading. The book was fast paced and very enjoyable. I would recommend anyone to read this. The romance, lies, secrets, and betrayals it is everything wrapped up into one novel. I am going to look for Fiona Davis's first novel and I can't wait for The Masterpiece to come out!

Blitz and Giveaway: Deal Takers by Laura Lee

Deal Takers
Laura Lee
Publication date: July 17th 2018
Genres: Comedy, New Adult, Romance
When he takes charge, I’ve been known to do a lot of stupid shit, despite the fact that I have a genius IQ. Case in point: How I met the woman of my dreams.
Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I don’t regret that moment of idiocy one bit. It may have been one of the most embarrassing moments of my life, but you know what they say about first impressions, right? Well, I can guarantee that I made quite the impression that evening. (Don’t worry; I’ll tell you all the gory details later.)
Most days, she acts like she hates me—probably because I behave like an ass— but we both know the truth: Rainey O’Neil wants me just as much as I want her—she just doesn’t want to admit it.
Good thing I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge.
*Deal Takers is the second installment in the Dealing with Love world but can be read as a standalone.
“C’mon dude, work with me here. I swear I’ll be more selective going forward. GO LIMP YOU BASTARD!”
Okay so maybe taking Viagra wasn’t the smartest idea after all. Let me be clear that I don’t need it; I’m a healthy twenty-three-year-old guy. And I’m hung like Justin Bieber, only thicker. Yeah, I saw the pictures online—color me curious. But back to my predicament: My buddy swore the little blue pill is the ultimate sexual enhancer so I decided to partake. I’d like to point out that most guys don’t regularly get the chance to have a horizontal party with two hot sisters and said chance was presented to me on a silver platter. Before you get grossed out, they’re step-sisters so it’s not as weird as it sounds. And did I mention how fucking hot they are? We’re talking Pamela Anderson from the good ol’ Baywatch days. Not current Pam because let’s face it; a Susan Sarandon she is not. I mean seriously, could Suz be any sexier? She’s aged like fine wine—a vintage I’d drink like a motherfucking Slurpee. Great, now I’m thinking about banging hot MILF’s which certainly isn’t helping my boner situation. I’ve always had a thing for older women.
Anyhoo, I’m getting off track again. Where was I? Oh yeah, I’m sitting in the Emergency Room parking lot talking to my painfully hard dick. The commercials warn that you should seek medical attention if your erection lasts more than four hours. Well, here I am, EIGHT hours and TWO ROUNDS with the sisters later, with a fucking hard-on that won’t quit. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I was being punk’d. Who would’ve ever thought I’d be complaining about my dick staying hard for too long? If you’ve never suffered this cruel fate, let me assure you; it fucking hurts. I think I may have actually broken the poor guy. He’s raw from way too much friction and don’t even get me started on how difficult it was to take a piss.
Think, asshole! Think! I close my eyes and concentrate on some of the most non-erotic things I can think of: Kittens. Grandma Ethel. Munchkinland. Damn it, that last one made me scream like a girl but my spaceship is still ready for liftoff. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise; those creepy high-voiced fuckers are terrifying. TERRIFYING I TELL YOU!
I slam my head back into the seat, take a deep breath, and groan in frustration. I rip the keys out of the ignition and slide out of my truck as carefully as possible. With the front of my shorts tented in the most obvious way possible, I stroll through the automatic doors of North Seattle Memorial and walk up to the lady at the front desk. The look of revulsion on her face as she eyeballs my pocket rocket matches my level of embarrassment.
“May I help you?” she inquires with a side order of stink eye.
“Um…” I nod toward my bulge. “I think I should see a doctor about this.”
Her eyebrows reach her hairline. “What seems to be the problem, sir?”
“My erection-way won’t go own-day,” I whisper in mediocre Pig Latin. “I took some Iagra-vay and I think my ick-day may be oken-bray.”
“I see. So, your chief complaint is that you took some Viagra and you think you may have broken your penis as a result?”
I glare at her. “Lady, do you not know the purpose of Pig Latin?”
I swear to God her lips twitch. “I’m sorry, sir, but the purpose behind Pig Latin is not in the Employee Handbook.”
“Well, it should be,” I mutter.

Caleb might be in charge of Lily’s safety, but when they’re locked down in her Silicon Valley mansion she’s the master. This book was a quick, fantastic read. I do have one main thing I didn't like and that was how poorly the oral bits were written. I honestly got so fed up with that I had to just skip past them beyond that the book is amazing. I really didn’t want it to end. This was a difficult review to write I’ll be honest but I’m trying to not put any spoilers in it. So I apologize for the shortness of it but I will say is go pick this book up and give it a read you will not regret it. Honestly I was kind of torn on how many stars to give it as well. It was so well written minus the oral parts. If my dream tbr pile didn't grow by the day I would read again and I would definitely read more by this author as she writes in two names.

Review: Albert Einstein Speaking by R.J. Gedney

Title: Albert Einstein Speaking
Author: R.J. Gedney
Publisher: Canongate Books
Publication Date: June 12, 2018
Pages272 pages
Where to buy: Amazon

Summary: Princeton. New Jersey.
14th March 1954

'Albert Einstein speaking.'
'Who?' asks the girl on the telephone.
'I'm sorry,' she says. 'I have the wrong number.'
'You have the right number,' Albert says.

From a wrong number to a friendship that would impact both their lives, Albert Einstein Speaking begins with two unlikely friends - the world's most respected scientist and a schoolgirl from New Jersey. From their first conversation Mimi Beaufort had a profound effect on Einstein and brought him, in his final years, back to life. In turn he let her into his world.

Albert Einstein Speaking is the story of an incredible friendship, and of a remarkable life. The son of an electrician in nineteenth-century Germany, Albert Einstein went on to become one of the twentieth century's most influential scientists and the most famous face in the world. This riotous, charming and moving novel spans almost a century of European history and shines a light on the real man behind the myth.

This book was in no way what I excepted. I liked it mostly because I feel like I learned a lot about Albert Einstein. I liked it because it had a lot of German in there. However, this book was not how they summary describes it to be. So if you are expecting it to be a young woman conversation with an elderly Einstein. Maybe a little foolish like me and thinking the it was a young woman from the future holding a conversation with an elderly Einstein you will be wrong. It is not like that. It is mostly reading of his life from birth forward. How he was a curious child, almost a heartless man, loveless father, brilliant, among other things. The start of this book is exactly as the summary describes which is perfect then it falls into basically a biography of Einstein. I feel like the author should have stuck to one of the two things. I really liked the book at first then the more it got into the biography aspect the more I started to dislike the book and the more difficult it was for me to read it. I liked learning about Einstein some aspects were very interesting but it was still very difficult to move forward. There were a lot of aspects of the knowledge of Einstine that was shared that was hard for me to follow maybe because science isn't my strong point maybe because some of it was just unnecessary information.

Every minute she spent with Josh was turning into an agony of sexual frustration. She wanted him. And though she kept trying to convince herself having sex with Joshua Cain would be a stupid thing to do, she couldn't completely convince herself.

She kept thinking about last night, how she'd wondered where he was, whether he was with another woman. She knew he was attracted to her. At least she was fairly certain. When he looked at her, the hot gleam in those deep blue eyes spoke volumes.

Last night, she'd found herself waiting up, watching for his pickup headlights to come rolling down the dirt road back to the ranch. She'd felt a ridiculous wave of relief when he'd pulled up in front of his house well before nine P.M.

She didn't think he had been with a woman last night, but Josh was a virile man and a man like that had needs. Sooner or later, he would find himself a woman, and the straight truth was, Tory wanted to be that woman.

She glanced up at a knock on Josh's front door. She always kept the door lock just in case. Seeing Josh, she waved good-bye to Mrs. Thompson and Ivy and pulled the door open.

"You ready for your riding lesson?"

Riding lesson. Dear God in heaven. Her eyes ran over the hot male in front of her. Tory swallowed, trying to block the image that rose in her head.

She managed to smile. "Ready as I'll ever be."

In his usual faded jeans and a dark blue T-shirt that hugged his chest and biceps, he pushed up the brim of his beat-up cowboy hat, waited for her to walk past him across the porch, then fell in behind her.

Her heart was racing and it had nothing to do with the sudden realization she was actually going to have to learn to ride a horse.

"You ever been on a horse before?" Josh asked when they reached the cow barn, which he and Cole had reinforced after the horse barn burned down.

It wasn't much, but at least it provided a shady place out of the weather and a room off to one side for the new saddles, bridles, and other miscellaneous tack Josh had purchased.

"I went on a couple of desert trail rides before I had Ivy. The horses were pretty old."

Josh walked over to where a little sorrel with two white stocking feet stood saddled and ready. "This is Rosebud. She's twelve. Nice and calm, but she's not like those rental horses. Rose has plenty of spunk." He scratched the mare's forehead. "Don't you girl?" The horse nickered softly.

Josh ran a hand along the animal's sleek neck, the confident glide of his fingers making Tory's skin feel hot. Rosebud rubbed her head against his shoulder.

Josh had a way with animals. She had noticed that before. Except for Star.

"We'll need to adjust your stirrups."

She took a deep breath. "Okay."

"Put you knee here and I'll give you a boost." He clasped his fingers together and bent down. Tory put her knee in his cupped hands and he boosted her so easily she nearly went over the other side of the saddle.

Josh chuckled. "Sorry. I forgot how little you are." The minute he said the words, the smile slid off his face. Why the thought upset him she had no idea.

"You didn't hurt me. I'm fine."

He was all business again, adjusting the stirrups, showing her the correct position, how to hold the reins, keep them loose and low, with just enough pressure. The problem was that in order to show her, he had to touch her, and every time he touched her, she wanted to slide off the horse into his arms.

Oh, this was so bad. How had she ever come up with such a stupid idea?

Josh must have agreed because he got quieter and quieter, as if forcing each word out was a challenge.

"Let's...umm...go into the arena." He led Rosebud into the fenced in ring and directed Tory to ride in a circle, first walking, then trotting. Josh taught her to post, which kept her from bouncing around like a fool.

She rode for an hour, found herself enjoying the feel of the animal responding to her subtle commands.

"You're doing great but we'd better stop for the day. You'll be sore tomorrow if we don't."

A hot mental picture arose. She'd be pleasure sore if Josh did what she wanted him to do.

As he tied the mare to a ring in the wall, she glanced up at him, into eyes as blue and hot as the tip of a flame. Josh reached up and wrapped his hands around her waist. Tory set her palms on those wide shoulders and felt his amazing muscles bunch. It was too much. She couldn't take it any more.

When he swung her to the ground, she didn't let go, just went up on her tiptoes, slid her arms around his neck, and kissed him for all she was worth.

Josh growled low in his throat…

Review: One Small Thing by Erin Watt

Title: One Small Thing
Author: Erin Watt
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: June 26, 2018
Pages: 304 pages
Where to buy: Amazon, Barnes & Noble
Stars: 5 stars

Summary: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo of The Royals and When It’s Real comes a sensational new novel about a girl falling for the one boy she should never have met…

Beth’s life hasn’t been the same since her sister died. Her parents try to lock her down, believing they can keep her safe by monitoring her every move. When Beth sneaks out to a party one night and meets the new guy in town, Chase, she’s thrilled to make a secret friend. It seems like a small thing, just for her.

Only Beth doesn’t know how big her secret really is…

Fresh out of juvie and determined to start his life over, Chase has demons to face and much to atone for, including his part in the night Beth’s sister died. Beth, who has more reason than anyone to despise him, is willing to give him a second chance. A forbidden romance is the last thing either of them planned for senior year, but the more time they spend together, the deeper their feelings get.

Now Beth has a choice to make—follow the rules, or risk tearing everything apart…again.

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a quick read for me I actually finished it in less than 24 hours. In a sense I can understand Beth’s feeling of being trapped as a teen. It has been a while since I’ve read a YA but I really enjoyed this one. She made some mistakes she couldn’t understand some signals correctly, she acted out. But that’s all very understandable being young and feeling trapped and not feeling in control of your own life. When you feel like you can’t breath without being told to it can make you do some silly things. This book really has you gripping your seat at some points just wondering what’s going to happen next. I never read a book by Erin Watt before but I am very excited to read more by her. In a place and time where she feels trapped she found solace in the least expected place. She found what she wanted to do with her life when she didn’t know what she would be doing after college, some people know that their whole lives, some people know it for a few years. But she figured it out and she fought to make sure it happened. The best part of this is the happy ending. To Iowa!

Summary: Over one million “likes”—but only one of them matters.

After pop star Ryan De Luna praises Maisy Harrison’s YouTube cover of his classic hit, he offers Maisy and her fledgling band the opportunity of a lifetime: to be his opening act.

Music may be Maisy’s life, but she has one ground rule: never date a musician. That goes double for a heartbreaker like Ryan. If only she didn’t feel so vulnerable to his larger-than-life charm. And maybe now more than ever, when he asks for her help to shake off his playboy image. How can she resist playing the part of his fake girlfriend for the duration of the tour?

Ryan’s never met anyone like Maisy. She sees past all the star-studded fame and treats him like any other guy. And the more time they spend together, the more he finds himself falling for her. Now he’d like to make their imaginary fling an IRL thing. But can he convince her to take a chance and trust him with her heart?

This book had me hooked immediately it was cute and funny. Had bits of banter. I liked how it had some texts in it. I can connect with how Maisy is surrounded by her brothers influence. The way her brothers act about her dating or talking to guys is the exact same as mine do. It really makes me laugh and I connect so well with it. This book is fantastic and such a quick read. I really fell in love with the characters. It is extremely difficult to put down. The chemistry between Maisy and Ryan is fantastic, it really draws you into the book more. At first I kind of questioned it but then I realized my boyfriend and I had a crazy draw when we first met. Okay well I can’t speak for him but when I first met him I kept sneaking looks at him and tried to be around him even though I didn’t know him at all. I was just extremely drawn to this fabulous man. This book is very well written and you really feel like your there and can feel what Maisy can feel. I really didn’t want this book to end and when it did. I just wanted to find out more of what happened in their lives. It’s kind of addicting honestly. Would read again and highly recommended.

“Hey, you know what? You didn’t let me finish my pitch before, when I asked you to go on a date with me.”
She sighed, her eyes losing a little brightness and her smile dimming as she turned away to look at the reception guests on the dance floor. He tilted his head to see her better, and though he didn’t know her well enough to read her expression with accuracy, he saw wariness as her eyebrows knitted together. But when she sucked her lower lip into her mouth, he perceived a little bit of longing too, which made him press his advantage.
“Didn’t you wonder how I knew all that Shakespeare stuff?” he asked.
“Yes, actually,” she said, looking surprised by his question. “Come to think of it, I did wonder, but then you distracted me.”
He grinned. “Good distraction, right?”
She rolled her eyes, but her lips tilted up a little, which made him happy. “You were saying?”
“The OSF is twenty minutes from my house. I worked there taking tickets over spring break last year. So, if you’d like to go with me sometime—as a date—I might even be able to take you backstage. I’m sure Julia would give us a tour of the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.”
“Julia?” said Hannah, raising an eyebrow.
He saw it in her eyes, the way she was mentally backing away from him at the mere mention of another woman. Is that how she saw all men?
As players? As someone who’d hurt her and cheat on her if she let her guard down? He couldn’t help the way his feelings for her surged as he watched her—how much he wanted to be the person to prove to her that she could give her heart to someone who would keep it safe.
Julia is my Mom’s friend who works in group sales, is married, and has two kids.” He pulled Hannah’s hand behind his back, holding it hostage and drawing her closer until her chest pressed against his.
“And to be clear? I wouldn’t ask you out if I was seeing someone else. I don’t do that. I’m not with anyone right now, Hannah … except you.”
She flinched, and her face went utterly blank, except for her eyes, which looked worried and uncomfortable.
“You’re not with me,” she said softly, loosening her hand from his grasp and stepping away from him.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I have to use the ladies’ room. I’ll find you in a little bit, okay?
She turned and started walking away, while he babbled incoherently at her back:
“Wait. Hannah! No. I didn’t…I just—I just meant…Crap!”
He stopped talking when she was out of sight.
Dang it, Liam! Why do you have to be so freaking intense?
Probably because it bothered him that she kept trying to friend-zone him when he didn’t feel friendly toward her and pretty much hadn’t from the moment he’d laid eyes on her.
There were some girls he met—especially the shallow, self-absorbed ones—who turned him off the moment he met them. Most of the popular girls at his high school thought he was trouble, and even after he’d straightened himself out, they didn’t give him a chance. Not really. They’d fool around with him at a party—there was never a shortage of popular girls who wanted to make out with a bad boy—but on Monday morning, they’d act like they were too drunk to remember kissing him. And it sort of sucked, because Liam Callahan was one of those guys who quietly longed for a girlfriend, even though his reputation had pegged him inaccurately as a player.
He wanted to date someone. He wanted to leave a party with her on Saturday night, and hold her hand when he walked into school on Monday morning. He wanted to be the first person she texted when she was happy or upset about something. He wanted to invite her over for dinner with his mom. He wanted to introduce her to his friends:
You guys, this is my girlfriend.
He’d imagined saying those words about a thousand times, but he’d never had the chance to say them, and it bothered him. A lot.
But tonight? Meeting Hannah? Somehow it felt like maybe what he wanted was actually, finally, possible.
When Hannah looked up at him with those huge, vulnerable, dark brown eyes, he felt hopeful.
“Damn it,” he growled softly, frustrated that he’d pushed her too hard.
Maybe he was being pushy, but he liked her, and for all he knew, she was driving back up to Brookings in the morning. He wanted her to say yes to a date—his heart needed to know that he’d see her again.
